About Mercury Mountaineer
The Explorer-based Mountaineer sees few alterations for 2000. The Mountaineer is marketed as a premium SUV for ladies and families, and it is available with either a 4.0-liter SOHC V6 or a 5.0-liter V8 engine. While the horsepower numbers are similar (210 for the V6 and 215 for the V8), the V8 provides more usable torque at the tradeoff of higher fuel consumption. Transmission options for the V6 continue to include a five-speed automatic and a four-speed automatic with the V8.
The Mountaineer received new safety features in the shape of optional side airbags and an optional reverse parking aid that warns of an approaching collision with an audio beep last year. The braking system was also modified in 1999, with a larger brake booster and revised rear brake calipers.
The only significant change for 2000 is the addition of the Premier and Monterey packages. The packages don’t include anything particularly novel, but they do group a wide range of luxury amenities together. To distinguish Mountaineers from the Premier package, Mercury sells this vehicle solely in Spruce Green with a Medium Prairie Tan interior. Color-keyed to the Spruce Green exterior are the grille, body-side moldings, liftgate molding and license plate shield, rear-quarter extension, running boards, and front and rear bumpers. The Mountaineer Monterey, the other new model, boasts two-tone paint, chrome wheels, and a luxurious interior.
If a new-for-2000 package is ordered, the interior (already good in its own right) is upgraded with unique floor mats, leather-trimmed power-adjustable sport bucket seats, and a wood-grain instrument panel.
Despite the luxury features, the Mountaineer retains a very trucklike personality, which might be a plus or a detriment. It’s strong and solid, but the steering is slow and cumbersome, and the body leans in tight turns. The braking system is superb, and the suspension is accommodating, although the truck can bounce about on poor pavement. There is a Control-Trac four-wheel drive option (with the V6) or a full-time all-wheel-drive option for individuals who live in cold-weather locations or intend to use the vehicle’s off-road capabilities.
The Mountaineer’s offerings are similar to those of the Explorer, as are those of many Mercury and Ford models. However, this does not take away from the fact that the Mountaineer is one of the best SUVs on the market. It has lots of room for transporting people and equipment through the suburban jungle. The copious basic amenities of the Mercury provide a great lot of comfort, and the powerful engine options are a plus while overtaking at interstate speeds. If you like the Explorer but don’t want to watch your own car every 10 minutes while driving, Mercury provides an interesting option.
